Session 4: Go Make Disciple
My brothers and sisters, we claim to be Christians, and our greatest desire is to know Christ. Knowing Christ must be the foundation of truth that we live out. What kind of knowledge about Christ do we understand up to this day? How did He live His life? What example did He give us? What was Christ's purpose for living in this world? As people who claim to be followers of Christ, have we truly followed His example?
Jesus is God who came into the world. He lived and suffered, He died, rose again, and ascended into heaven. The Bible records that He will come back again. Why did Jesus do all of that? It was clearly because of His obedience to the Father, so that humans could know the true God, and to reveal the fulfillment of the promised salvation. Therefore, if we claim to be followers of Christ, then Christ's main purpose for living in the world must become our main purpose too. Being a disciple is not just about saying 'I know Jesus,' but also about 'following His example and the purpose of His life.' Knowing Jesus is not just for us to enjoy by ourselves, but it is to be shared so that others can experience that same knowledge of Christ.
Why must we make others disciples of Christ?
Jesus is the only true God who must be continually proclaimed to everyone in the world. In 1 John 5:20, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the true one. We are in the true one—that is, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” If someone does not have Jesus in their life and does not have a relationship with Him, then they truly do not have God in their life.
If someone does not know the Lord Jesus as God, they also do not have a certain salvation, because salvation is only found in Christ. Jesus says in John 14:6, 'Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The words 'I am' emphasize that there is absolutely no one else, because only Jesus is our Savior and Mediator to bring us back into a relationship with God the Father. Peter says in Acts 4:12, 'There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.' This is the foundation of why we must make others disciples of Christ, because it is clear that He alone is the true God and He alone is the only Savior."
Paul says in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.” Why did Paul fight so hard to preach the gospel and make others disciples of Christ? It was because he had a firm confidence in the gospel that he believed in and that had changed his life. 1 Corinthians 15:9–10, “For I am the least of the apostles, not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not ineffective. However, I worked harder than any of them, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”
The question for you and me is, do we truly know the right Christ? Are we confident that Christ has changed our lives? Are we sure of our salvation in Him? If we have experienced all of these things, then preaching the gospel and making others disciples of Christ will become a great desire in our hearts, so that others can experience what we have already experienced in Christ.
How do we disciple others?
In Jude 1:20–23 it says, “But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. 22 Have mercy on those who waver; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.”
How can we disciple others?
It all begins with ourselves. 'Build yourselves up in your most holy faith.' Our faith can only be built up when we truly prioritize our relationship with God. That is why it is written in John 15:4–5, “Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.” Are we willing to be guided to become a disciple? Are we ready to be taught to become a disciple? Are we ready to be shepherded by someone who is called and wants to be used by God to disciple us? As a servant of God, this is one of the verses I fear the most, 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.” A shepherd or minister must be a role model of how to follow Jesus, so that they can say, 'follow my example.
When a person has a relationship with God, they will be used by God to reach others. It says, “save others by snatching them from the fire. How do we reach them? Jesus already told us in Matthew 28:18–20, “Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Go means to take action. This word is not just an invitation, but a command for His disciples who had lived together with Him and who had been restored after His resurrection. It means going out of our comfort zone, and going out to share the news about Christ to people who are still outside the church—to our families, friends, and coworkers.
Make others disciples of Christ, and baptize them in the name of the Triune God as a confession that they want to follow Him. Baptism is also a symbol of the forgiveness of sins in Christ. Next, teach them everything Jesus has done, because learning about Christ is essential before we can teach others. Every believer is called to teach others to become disciples of Christ. We must be confident that when we commit ourselves to discipling others, we do not walk alone—God is definitely with us
Therefore, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:16, “For if I preach the gospel, I have no reason to boast, because I am compelled to preach—and woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” Preaching the gospel is not for bragging, looking for human praise, or becoming famous. Instead, it is a requirement because we have been saved. Preaching the gospel is our way of saying thank you for what the Lord Jesus has done for us as sinners. Acts 20:24, “But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.”
