The Promotion Plan
Have you ever felt as if your life has stopped? You have prayed, waited, and tried to do what is right, but nothing seems to change. In Genesis 40:23, “The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.” Joseph’s life seemed to stop in prison. Today, let us continue our meditation in Genesis 41.
1. God Works According to His Timing (Verses 1–13)
Verse 1 says, “When two full years had passed…”. Two years was not a short time for Joseph to stay in prison. Then it says, ”…Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile.” In verse 8, “In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.” This shows that interpreting dreams was not something ordinary. None of the wise men or magicians in Egypt could explain them. Then, beginning in verse 9, the chief cupbearer remembered Joseph, who had helped him before. Verses 12–13 say: “Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream. And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled.” (Genesis 41:12–13) Pharaoh was truly convinced by the cupbearer’s testimony because the interpretation had happened exactly as Joseph had said.
Why did the cupbearer remember Joseph only then? Clearly, this was God’s timing! God works according to His own time and His own plan, which are not the same as human timing and plans. As human beings, we often think that God is late or that God is silent. But God is always working to prepare us for the parts of life that He has already planned for us. God is never in a hurry. He is always on time. Most importantly, we must remember that God never plans the lives of His children carelessly. God never guesses or experiments. He knows exactly what is best for our lives so that we may enjoy the life He has given us and glorify Him.
2. Humility Brings Glory to God (Verses 14–36)
In verse 14, Joseph was cleaned up and brought before Pharaoh. In verse 15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” But with humility and faith before Pharaoh, Joseph answered, “I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” (Genesis 41:16). Joseph did not seek popularity or think, “Finally everyone knows who I am.” Instead, he pointed Pharaoh to God. He admitted that his ability to interpret dreams did not come from himself but entirely from God. In verse 25 Joseph said, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.” Joseph declared that Pharaoh’s dreams were God’s way of revealing what He was about to do (see verses 28 and 32).
In our lives, we must always remember that every ability we have comes from God. Therefore, we have no reason to exalt ourselves. Every gift from God should be used to point ourselves and others to Him. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Proverbs 18:12 says, “Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”
3. Wisdom Comes from God (33-36)
Joseph not only explained the meaning of dreams, but he also explained the best solution for Pharaoh. In verses 34-35, "It is also good for my lord Pharaoh to do this, namely, to place overseers over this land and in the seven years of plenty to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt. 35 They are to gather all the foodstuffs in these good years to come and, under the authority of my lord Pharaoh, store up grain in the cities for food, and store it up." A person who is filled with God's wisdom is someone who always thinks about solutions or solutions to solve a problem. And to solve a problem you have to rely on God's wisdom, in James 1:5 it says "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God."
Because of God's wisdom, Joseph's life changed. In verses 37-38, "Is it possible for us to have someone like this, someone full of the Holy Spirit? Pharaoh said to Joseph: "Because God has told you all this, there is no one so wise and wise as you. 40 You are the authority over my palace, and to your command all my people will obey; This throne is the only advantage I have over you." After years of waiting—remaining faithful, steadfast, and reverent toward God—the time finally arrived for Joseph to become a leader. God transformed Joseph’s circumstances from those of a prisoner-slave to those of a leader; while God is capable of changing a person's situation in an instant, He often prepares individuals over a long period. God focuses more on shaping a person's character than on simply granting a promotion.
4. Do not let the past control you; prepare yourself to be a blessing
In verses 50–52, Joseph has two sons. The first is named Manasseh, for he said, "God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house." This does not mean Joseph literally forgot all his suffering or his family; rather, it emphasizes that he refused to be controlled by the wounds of the past. He chose not to dwell on the past but to remain faithful to the God who held his future. Someone who remains fixated on the past will find it very difficult to see the beautiful plans God has for the future. The second son is named Ephraim, for he said, "God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction." This signifies that God blessed Joseph in the very place where he had endured great suffering. Amidst life's hardships, God provides blessings for His children to enjoy.
Finally, verses 56–57 state: "The famine was severe throughout the land. So Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. 57 People from all over the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe across the whole world." Through God’s presence and wisdom, Joseph became a channel of God’s blessing for the nations. God prepared Joseph so that, through his life, many people would be blessed and saved from the calamity of famine. This is what God desires for all His children: that He blesses them so they may become a blessing to many.
Conclusion
- During times of suffering and waiting, continue to trust that God is at work in the lives of His children according to His perfect timing.
- Remain humble when God uses us as His instruments, for all things come from the Lord and are for the Lord; He alone is to be glorified (Romans 11:36).
- Give thanks for God’s wisdom and ask Him for it, so that our lives may serve as instruments to bring solutions amidst any problem.
- Do not allow yourself to be controlled by or fixated on the past; instead, set your heart on the hope of the future God has prepared, for we are being prepared to be blessed and to become a blessing to many.
